Surge in Consumption and LNG Imports
In the first 11 months of FY2024-25, India’s natural gas consumption reached 66,976 million metric standard cubic meters (MMSCM), marking a 9.7% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
LNG imports surged by 20.9% during the same period, totaling 34,329 MMSCM. This rise is attributed to increased demand across industrial, residential, and transportation sectors.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), India’s natural gas demand is projected to grow by nearly 60% by 2030, reaching 103 billion cubic meters annually. This growth is driven by rapid infrastructure development and policy support. Meanwhile, due to limited domestic production growth, India’s LNG imports are expected to more than double to around 65 billion cubic meters annually by 2030 to meet rising demand.
